Recession Raises Doubts About New Arena In Sacramento

The current recession has raised doubts about a planned basketball arena at Cal Expo in Sacramento.

"There is not a developer I know in the country who would do it, especially in today's economy," John Semcken, vice president of sports stadium builder Majestic Realty Co., told the Sacramento Bee.

Majestic was one of four developers consulted by Cal Expo and the NBA about the viability of their plan.

Even if the economy improves, Semcken said last week, that the initial plan appears risky. It calls for a developer to front money for the project.

Regardless, the Kings remain optimistic.

Kings Interested In Jake Voskuhl

The Kings are in need of another big man and Jake Voskuhl appears to be a likely option.

"When we start Spencer [Hawes] and Jason [Thompson] together, if one of them gets in foul trouble and the other one needs a rest, then we're awfully small," coach Paul Westphal told the Sacramento Bee.

Agent Mark Bartelstein told the Bee that he has spoken to the Kings about Voskuhl, who was waived by Dallas on Wednesday.

Bobby Jackson To Retire

Bobby Jackson will announce his retirement from the NBA on Friday.

"You're sad because every player hates for this day to come," Jackson, 36, said Thursday. "But also, you look ahead to the future and you see that you can walk away from the game when you wanted to walk away. Everything is intact. My family is happy."
